Japanese are well known for their flawless, young skin. Japanese skin care routine are as famous as korean skin care routine.
Recently, I’ve read Japanese secrets of Beautiful skin & weight control by Hisayo Grace Maeda. So I decided to share some beauty secrets from that book.
In this blog post, I’m gonna share about basic traditional japanese skin care practice from that book. I had shared some Skin care routine post previously. Kindly read that for better understanding of skin and skin care routine.
1) Hydrate the skin
I have already mentioned about the benefits of hydrating skin in various blog posts. Because It is one of the most important skin care routine.
Basically, we know that water carries nutrients to every organ and at the same time, it carries waste away from our body. It helps us to maintain the body temperature. By drinking enough water, you can prevent any heat related issues.
If you don’t hydrate yourself well, it affects your brain and heart. So it leads to Sleeplessness and constipation which eventually leads to numerous skin problems.
So always take atleast 6 to 8 glasses of water every day. Include fresh fruit juices in your diet.

2) Eat essential nutrients
One of the main essential nutrients for skin care is protein. Basically, Collagen and elastic fibres are present in our skin. They are vital to maintain youthful skin.
As we start ageing, collegen and elastic fibres also start to slow down their function. Our skin needs amino acid to increase their production through the protein rich food and nutrient creams.
Apart from proteins, Vitamins and Minerals are also important for skin health.
Vitamin A
It provides essential nutrients for the eyes and skin.
Sources : Butter, Cheese, liver, Egg yolk, spinach, carrots, Eel, whole milk, dark green, yellow and orange veggies.
Vitamin B
It helps to absorb nutrients and promote metabolism. It makes our skin smooth and prevents oily skin and acne. Besides these, It also strengthens skin, eyes and mucous membrane.
Source : Yeast, milk, liver, egg, tomatoes, spinach, poultry, Green veggies, peas and beans, nuts and seeds, whole grains and cereals.
Vitamin C
It is essential for collagen production.
Source : Citrus fruits, strawberries, green peppers, spinach, broccoli and tomatoes.
Vitamin E
It promotes healing of acne and prevents ageing
Source : Legumes, vegetable oils, Egg yolk and wheat.

3) Japanese facial massage
Like our body, our face also need facial massage. It slows down the anti ageing process. It helps to reduce wrinkles, blemishes.
Massage your face in right way or else unnecessary stretching leads to some other problems. Always massage upwards and outwards using upward stroke and light downward stroke.
Use Massage creams or facial oil. Then wipe off the cream / oil using tissues.
4) Sleep
Sleeping on floor with straw mat is very beneficial. At the same time, firm bed mattress also does the same thing.
To prevent wrinkles, lie flat on your back facing the ceiling. Lying on your side promotes wrinkles.
Avoid Tea / Coffee and don’t eat anything atleast two hours before sleeping.
5) Wash Face
Cleansing is very essential and first step of any skin care routine. In that book, the author explained about 3 – step cleansing.
- First step is to remove makeup by massaging cleansing cream into the skin for 10 seconds and wipe away using tissue.
- Wash by massaging cleansing foam and weak acidic soap for 10 seconds. Rinse thoroughly by splashing face with lukewarm water for 10 seconds.
- Apply a facial pack once or twice a week based on your skin type for 5 – 10 minutes.
While cleansing, Index and thumb finger create more pressure than required. So use middle and ring finger for gentle pressure.
These are all some of the basic Japanese skin care routine. Follow this routine for better skin. Still there are many skin care tips in that book. I’ll share them on upcoming posts.
What is your current skin care routine? Can’t wait to know them all. Thanks for reading.
